Tavistock Youth Hockey Section
Youth hockey training is for all younger members of the club. The club welcomes a wide range of children from the age of 8yrs upwards,until deemed ready to move onto Senior training. The club can provide hockey sticks and balls although it is a club requirement that parents/guardians invest in a gum shield and a pair of shin pads for their child. Qualified Coaches run the sessions with help from club members.

Letter from the Chairman
Welcome to the new hockey year! Last year finished on a high with record
numbers of juniors attending training, and our first year playing in the Plymouth
Friday night league yielded an impressive haul of medals!
Important message. To play matches outside training nights kids MUST be
club members, or they are not covered by our insurance and can't play. Membership forms
are attached - please fill out fully so we have current contact phone numbers
etc. Each session costs an additional £2 towards pitch hire, lights and equipment.
Training is 6pm to 7.15pm this year to ensure a good game at the end.
Equipment
Mouth guard and shin pads are essential. Without them kids can do the training
but can't play in the game at the end, which is the bit they enjoy most! We can
lend sticks free. Once your kids are sure they're going to play please consider
Astroturf shoes for them - it is very slippery in trainers. No studs or blades
please. All equipment is available in the town at a good variety of prices.
Just so you know roughly what is happening, each session will work
approximately as follows, with kids in appropriate groups:
* 6pm - arrival - collection of money Volunteers to assist
welcome! Make sure we have your contact phone number!
* Coaches carry out Health and Safety checks on pitch and on players
(checking shinpads, mouthguards etc. Please remove jewellery)
* Warm up - to get those little muscles working
* 6.15 to 7pm. Two training 'drills' working on skills, with a break midway
for a drink, so please provide them with a drink.
* 7pm to 7.15 mini matches

**Youth Strip -Available NOW**
At last our youth players have their own strip! Getting the shirts has been surprisingly time-consuming, but I'm delighted to say our young players now have a strip of their own in the town's colours. Several other teams play in red and black, so we've sourced shirts that reverse the adult colours of red with a black trim to black with red trim.
We have teams playing in under 9, under 10 and under 12 matches on Friday nights at UCP Marjon in Plymouth, and the prospect of some friendly matches on other evenings.
Hopefully in a couple of weeks the club will field a youth team in our own colours for the first time! If you have a youth player in your family, all you need to do is order!
To keep costs to a minimum we are going for plain black shorts and black socks with a red top that can be purchased in Active Co, the sports shop right here in Tavistock (the socks
are not expensive as the town's other sports teams use them!). The shirts are made by a company called Stanno, of a Climatec material designed not to irritate and to wick away moisture. They have been sourced through Tony Pryce Sports in Plymouth.
Shirts for younger players come in two sizes - 116/128 and 140/152 (sorry if you haven't got to grips with metric measurements - I don't have an imperial equivalent! These retail at £10.99, but if you order through the club I should get a 10% discount for orders totaling
over £100 so hitting our target price of £10. I reckon those sizes will fit up to about 10 years.
Older players may need to order adult sizes. I understand a size Small adult is 164 (whatever that means!) and thereafter they are sized Medium, Large etc. Naturally adult sizes are more costly at £12.99, though if they go in with an order they will get 10%
off as well (by my rudimentary maths skills this means they will cost about £11.69).
I will be bringing a sample of each of the two junior sizes to 6pm training on Thursdays so players can try them for size, then I can place an order. If you can't make training give me a ring (07530 001098) to place your order. If I have time I'll ask Active Co
for current prices for shorts and socks.
